Uma Thurman isn't what you'd call a conventional screen beauty. She's tall and lanky, with sandy blonde hair; her nose protrudes distinctly and she has a sort of off kilter grace about her. Uma was born in Boston but her family was quite the multi-culti group. Her mother Nena Birgitte Caroline von Schlebrügge is a half Swedish half-German model born in Mexico, while her father, Robert, is a professor at Columbia, and the first Westerner to be ordained as a Tibetan Buddhist monk. Uma was actually named after an Dbuma Chenpo (the db is silent). Uma started out as a model and eventually found fame on the big screen. Today you can catch any number of her movies on satellite TV, in high definition.

Johnny Be Good: This was Uma's breakthrough role. The 1988 film was your typical college romp flick with the young sports star Johnny deliberating over his future career moves-- nothing truly notable, except for Uma of course, who played the young Georgia Elkans. Also starring in the movie were Anthony Michael Hall, Robert Downey Jr. and Jennifer Tilly.

Henry and June: This is an adaptation of the book of the same name by the French author Anais Nin. The story takes place in Paris in the early 1930's. Uma plays Henry Miller's wife June, a bohemian spirit of a kind with the famous writer himself. The movie deals with a torrid love affair between June, Henry and Anais Nin. The movie was given an NC-17 rating in the states, so it's not one you'd want to watch with the kiddies.

Pulp Fiction: Here Thurman plays the unforgettable Mia Wallace, cocaine addict and wife of mob boss Marsellus Wallace. With her black bobbed hair and her cheesy jokes, Uma's character steals the movie. The role launched Uma's career, however despite her new found stardom, the actress, chose not to do any big budget films for the following three years. Pulp Fiction, cult hit that it is, can be caught regularly on your satellite TV movie channels.

Gattaca: This sci-fi thriller stars Thurman and her ex-husband Ethan Hawke. Uma plays Irene Cassini, a genetically privileged member of society who works with the Gattaca Aerospace Corporation. She later falls in love with the genetically flawed Vincent, played by Hawke, and troubles ensue.

Batman and Robin: In this edition of Batman, Thurman plays the wily plant fiend Poison Ivy, aka Dr. Pamela Isley. Although this movie was voted one of the worst in the Batman series, with numerous Razzy nominations, Uma still stands out as a dazzling femme fatale.

The Avengers: Uma plays the ever-composed Emma Peel in this remake of the British classic TV show. While the critical reception wasn't very warm, it's a fun film and Thurman's costumes are certainly interesting.

Kill Bill Volumes 1 and 2: Kill Bill saw Thurman pair up again with director Quentin Tarantino. This time she plays a samurai sword-wielding assassin who, after waking from a coma, goes on a killing spree to avenge those who have done her wrong. This is a brilliantly orchestrated film, which you've got to watch in all its HD glory. Uma's character is one tough cookie.

My Super Ex-Girlfriend: In this flick, Thurman shows us her comedic abilities, playing alongside Anna Faris and Luke Wilson. Uma plays a super hero, a somewhat neurotic woman who happens to have super strength and the ability to fly.
